Prior to the TISOLS symposium we organise several workshops on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April. All workshops will be held at TU Delft Faculty Of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.
Workshop 1: Governance and subsidence
Saturday 18 April, 13:30-17:30
Subsidence is an issue that involves many policy fields, complex technical aspects and governance embedment. There is a need for an integrated approach in order to manage subsidence and to develop appropriate strategies and measures that are effective and efficient on both the short and long term. Urban (ground)water management, adaptive flood risk management and related spatial planning strategies are just examples of the options available. In this course we will go into the following topics:
- Strategies and action perspectives
- Roles and responsibilities of different actors
- Adaptation pathways
Participants will work on a case study of a subsiding city, using a methodology developed for dealing with subsidence.
Workshop 2: Economic impact assessment of subsidence in the built environment

The economic consequences of subsidence are often not or incompletely identified. However, economic impact assessment of subsidence could be very valuable in various phases of the policy cycle: 1) problem analysis (communicating urgency of the problem); 2) planning (provide economic rationale of investments or changes in policy, e.g. CBA), implementation (support business models, financing strategies). In this short course, we will discuss an economic impact assessment framework for subsidence and highlight present literature in this context. Subsequently, we discuss how this framework can be applied in practice, highlighting various experiences in relation to this topic in the context the Dutch built environment, including tools such as risk analysis, lifecycle costs (LCC) and cost-benefit analysis (CBA).
Workshop 3: Soft-soil subsidence
Sunday 19 April, 9:00-12:30
The course aims to provide a broad overview of soft-soil subsidence, focusing on issues, knowledge, and approaches encountered and developed in The Netherlands. Topics that will be addressed include the occurrence and distribution of soft soils (notably clay and peat) in The Netherlands, drivers and mechanisms of subsidence, modelling approaches and software, developments in measurement and monitoring, and mitigation and adaptation. Special attention will be paid to soft-soil creep and the isotache model, and lab and field methods of model parameterization, limitations and outlook. Basic knowledge of soil mechanics and consolidation theory is recommended for this course.
Workshop 4: Subsidence Monitoring
Saturday 18 April, 9:00-12:30
This TISOLS technical workshop will cover tools and methods for monitoring land subsidence that accompanies aquifer-system compaction and groundwater extraction. The focus is on measuring subsidence and estimating hydraulic and mechanical parameters governing the simulation of aquifer-system compaction at local and regional scales.
Workshop 5: Hydrogeological subsidence modelling basic and advanced

Groundwater models are increasingly used as a basis for prediction and management of land subsidence accompanying the compaction of susceptible aquifer systems. The TISOLS technical workshop will cover approaches to simulating aquifer-system compaction and land subsidence used in the MODFLOW subsidence models of groundwater flow, aquifer-system compaction and land subsidence.
Workshop 6: InSAR for subsidence detection and monitoring I & II

InSAR 2: Sunday 19 April, 13:30-17:30
Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), the European Space Agency (ESA), and SkyGeo Netherlands are organizing a joint workshop dedicated to the detection and monitoring of land subsidence using satellite radar interferometry (InSAR).
The workshop consists of two parts. The first part - InSAR I - aims at the basic fundamentals of InSAR as geodetic technique. The main goal is to
- Get an overview of the basic fundamentals, which flavors of InSAR exist
- Understand the fundamentals of geodetic networks in relation to InSAR
- When can I use it InSAR, and when should I use alternatives?
- The two approaches: data interpretation vs data consultation
The European Space Agency will provide a practical session to introduce the participants to basic interferometric analysis using Sentinel-1 and SNAP. Both the software and the data are free and open.
The second part - InSAR II - is intended to
- Get an overview of the more advanced time series processing techniques,
- Understand the various advanced InSAR information products, and
- discuss recent developments in relation to geodetic reference stations, missions and opportunities in relation to subsidence detection and monitoring.
Participants can choose to follow only one part or participate in the both parts.
